Answer 1: Both my father and my maternal grandmother have lived with hearing impairment. We have learned, as a family, that it is important to keep this in mind in our conversations. We are always conscious of environmental noises, so that we could adjust our speaking volume or proximity when we were communicating. Because this is an invisible disability, I see how it can be extremely challenging for my father when he is in a retail environment or communicating with strangers. They may not be conscious of this barrier and end up speaking too quietly or quickly, effectively, though inadvertently, cutting my dad off from the conversation. I must admit, I have been guilty of this myself in the past. My experiences with my grandma, my dad and more recently my own diminishing hearing has been extremely enlightening in this regard.

Answer 2: My campaign thus far has consisted of knocking on doors and calling constituents, business owners and non-profit organizations to identify the needs and priorities of the constituency and its residents. So far, the greatest accessibility challenges in the constituency of Emerson are the need for more housing for individuals living with intellectual disabilities. I am proud to run for a party that has committed to increase residential options for these individuals and I will work hard to make sure these meet the needs of Emerson residents and all Manitobans. My job, should I be elected, will be to continue to have these conversations to identify the needs of the constituency and to represent my constituents in the legislature to ensure their voices are being heard and to advocate for funding to support the infrastructure and service needs of the constituency.
