Manitoba Liberal Party Candidate - Leslie Beck

I fortunately do not have anyone in my family that has disabilities. Except for age related mobility issues.

Everyone wants to make sure all people can access places they wish to attend or are required to attend.  The challenge is how do we upgrade old infrastructure?  This will require all people to first assess what is the disability and who and how do we make the limited access accessible? Municipalities want to comply but how do they come up with the dollars to do it?  We know it seems easy; widen the door.....but what's in those walls once it's exposed? This all needs to be assessed because it might be more cost efficient to put in temporary lifts and ramps till a new building is built.  As a former city official I can tell you this is a topic that is respectively debated at length.

All people should have access but all people should respect it may take time to provide that access depending on the disability and the capabilities of those to create the access..

Answer 1: My parents experienced the challenges of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's in the latter parts of their lives. It was very difficult to for our family and really opened our eyes to the importance of compassionate, inclusive care. My wife Sharon has had both knees replaced due to arthritis, and has experienced access issues due to this. She also experienced problems with accommodation at her workplace.

Answer 2: There are tremendous physical barriers that need to be overcome in our northern communities. Many of our structures are built around or over rock in Flin Flon and surrounding areas. Upgrades to make schools, hospitals, and other public buildings will require investment from the province and I am proud that the NDP is committed to investing in the services families count on.
